Most people enjoy shells from the beach. I’m quite sure that all of us, at one point of the other have collected or been amazed by shells.

Shells can now, not only add a soothing effect to your rooms, but now shells can also be used in the same way that a jam jar is used… to hold the wax so you can have shell candles.

You can essentially use any shells that is deep enough to hold some wax. Examples include oyster shells, mussel shells, clam shells, etc.

Supplies To Make Shell Candles

  1. Dye
  2. Wax
  3. Shells
  4. Scissors
  5. Thermometer
  6. Primed wicks
  7. Double boiler
  8. Kitchen scale

Step 1

  1. Get your wick ready.
  2. You will need to cut your wick to an appropriate height based on the height of the shell and how much wax you will be adding to the shell. The wick should be approximately 1.5 cm (½ inch) longer than the your candle will be high.

Step 2

  1. Melt your stearin, wax and any dye. If you want, you can also add an essential oil.

Step 3

  1. Once the wax has reached pouring temperature, pour into the shell.
  2. As soon as the wax begins to cool, simply insert the wick.

When you make shell candles, make sure you only light them in safe surroundings. Since shells are not always stable and can potentially rock, it’s important to have the shell candles on a stable surface.

If you bump them in anyway, then melted wax can potentially pour out of the wax.
