CHUNKY CANDLES

Many chandlers make chunky candles when they have pieces of wax left over from other projects.

This is a really easy candle to make that not only uses the old pieces, but actually looks good too.

There is no set rule regarding the amount of chunks you need to add. You can add a lot or a little, depending on how many chunks you have or how chunky you like your candles.

For best results, the chunks of wax need to be a decent size otherwise the chunks will not be seen within the candle. Therefore, most people use chunks that are approximately 1.5 to 2.5 cm (½ to 1 inch) in size.

Obviously, since the chunks need to be a decent size, you cannot make a chunky candle using a slender taper mould or any slender mould. Instead, this candle is best made in jam jars or a mould that is wide.

You can also make this candle with a cone mould. When using a cone mould, the base of the mould is wide but the top is narrow. This is fine. As long as part of the mould is wide enough to get the chunks in.

1. Wax
2. Mould
3. Scissors
4. Wax chunks
5. Thermometer
6. Primed wicks
7. Double boiler
8. Kitchen scale
9. Bowl of cool water
10. Dye if adding color
11. Stearin if making paraffin candles
12. Pencil, chopstick or wicking needle

1. Add the wick to the mould. To do this, follow Step 1 of the single color candle.

1. Add the chunks of old wax to the mould.

1. Melt the stearin and wax.
2. Pour the wax into the mould once the proper pouring temperature has been reached.
   • Please note, there is no color being added to the wax because we want to be able to see the chunks of old candle inside the candle we are making.

1. Place the mould in a bowl of cool water to let the candle cool. You will probably need to weigh the candle down in some way as candles naturally float.

1. After the candle has cooled, remove it from the water.
2. Follow Step 5 of the single color candle.

1. Remove the candle from the mould as describe in Step 6 of the single color candle.

Kandall Wick Says: If you don't have any leftover chunks of candle but want to make this candle, then not to worry! You can make your own chunks. To make your own chunks, simply heat enough stearin, dye and wax to cover a dish that has been wrapped in tin foil. Pour the wax into the now tin foil tray. Let the wax cool. Once cool, simply break the wax into chunks.
